MIAMI, FL, August 18, 2009 – The major search engines frequently update and change their algorithms to keep results relevant. Every so often, the changes are big enough to hit the mainstream media. For example, the arrival of Bing and the Yahoo & Microsoft merger have made for an active few months. To end the summer, Google has made a large announcement that is causing quite a bit of buzz: Google Caffeine.
On August 10, 2009, Google announced an update to their search engine under the code name Caffeine. Caffeine is "a secret project: a next-generation architecture for Google’s Web search" and has been acknowledged as a fundamental change to Google search algorithms. Google has not made a change of this significance since 2003-2005. Although a timeline for full deployment has not been announced, Google is planning on moving forward slowly and transitioning to a few datacenters before the full launch.
Caffeine will be more "powerful, flexible and robust," providing Google with the capabilities of updating and indexing new Web content faster for more real-time search engine results. What we have seen thus far with Caffeine is a strong emphasis on new Web content, social media indexing (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) and the shifting of blended or universal search results (Google maps, images, videos, etc.), depending on the search query.
With any change to Google, search engine results and rankings are always at the height of discussion. According to Google, most users will not notice a difference in the search results, but some members of the IT and online marketing world may notice a few changes, especially if there is any risk of losing valuable traffic from the search engine.
The announcement of Caffeine doesn’t mean that you should stop what you are doing and start making major changes. What it does mean though is that you should be educated about the changes and proactive to ensure you take advantage of any modifications. Searchers are actively looking for updated information by using social media, community sites and news releases, along with traditional websites. Therefore, searches on the new Google will feature an increased number of non-traditional information sources as a result of this shift in user behavior.
